Piracy is a war-like act committed by non-state actors (private parties not affiliated with any government) against other parties at sea, and especially acts of robbery and/or criminal violence at sea. People who engage in these acts are called pirates.
The term can include acts committed on land, in the air, or in other major bodies of water or on a shore. It does not normally include crimes committed against persons traveling on the same vessel as the perpetrator (e.g. one passenger stealing from others on the same vessel). The term has been used to refer to raids across land borders by non-state agents.
Piracy should be distinguished from privateering, which was authorized by their national authorities and therefore a legitimate form of war-like activity by non-state actors. This form of commerce raiding was outlawed by the Peace of Westphalia (1648) for signatories to those treaties.
Historically, offenders have usually been apprehended by military personnel and tried by military tribunals.

Maritime piracy, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982, consists of any criminal acts of violence, detention, rape, or depredation committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or aircraft that is directed on the high seas against another ship, aircraft, or against persons or property on board a ship or aircraft. Piracy can also be committed against a ship, aircraft, persons, or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any state, in fact piracy has been the first example of universal jurisdiction. Nevertheless today the international community is facing many problems in bringing pirates to justice
While the non-wartime 20th century tradition has been for merchant vessels not to be armed, the U.S. Government has recently changed the rules so that it is now best practice (see pdf file) for vessels to embark a team of armed private security guards.

Statement

This policy is the The Medical Wing Limited public statement of intentions and principles of action of the company regarding the potential effects upon the environment from our commercial activities. Our Environmental Policy sets out the intentions of The Medical Wing Limited and reference to the Policy can be made through the information department via the e mail address of info@the-medical-wing.com

Policy

An environmental review, carried out at Director level of The Medical Wing Limited, has been ratified by the Company. This review identified key areas of environmental significance and recommended measures for continual improvement, where necessary and practicable.

Responsibilities

The Managing Directors have overall responsibility to ensure wherever possible that the Company’s business activities do not have an adverse effect upon the environment and to comply with the policies and best practice set out in the document. This includes the day to day responsibility for all Health, Safety and Compliance issues.

Communication

The policy is communicated to every Manager within the Company, who hold an electronic copy within their local or operating office. Further copies can be obtained, at any time, from info@the-medical-wing.com

Continuous Improvement & Monitoring

Environmental issues are reviewed periodically, with particular regard to new business activities or additions to the Company’s existing portfolio.

Motor Vehicles

The Medical Wing Limited will use vehicles fuelled by either diesel or unleaded benzene, according to the type, size and purpose of the vehicle. Type of fuel will always be taken into consideration when placing a vehicle to task, in accordance with published guidelines on the most environmentally friendly fuel available, from reputable sources, where practicable.

Buildings

The Medical Wing Limited has a long term policy concerning new buildings, ensuring a design and construction conducive to energy efficiency and employee welfare. The Company is cognisant of the WR 1992 under the H&SAW 1974 in this respect. Where practicable, automatic lighting, heating and ventilation controls are installed. The Medical Wing Limited currently tenants its buildings and, prior to any agreements with landlords, ensures that a sound environmental policy is in place.

Consumables

With the advent of improved technology, all Company employees and contractors are encouraged to use “soft” copies to send and receive information, wherever possible and practicable. In this way, the use of paper can be reduced wherever and alternative means of communicating is possible. Company papers requiring destruction, where practicable, will be dispatched to a licensed organisation that will recycle the waste product. Company policy ensures that all paper and ink, where possible, is sourced from recyclable materials.

Employees

No smoking policies apply to all Company offices, where agreed by the majority of employees so located, or where legislation decrees. All Medical Wing Limited working environments are regularly reviewed by local managers to ensure that the atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable. The use of green plants is encouraged wherever possible. Employees at client sites are required to report to their respective managers, any hazard, potential hazard or method of working which is unsound, both environmentally and in respect of health hazards to themselves or others. Risk assessments will be carried out, in any event, of the workplace of employees assigned to customer premises.

Complaints

This is a component that is integrated into the core First Person On Scene Intermediate (FPOS-I) course that is run as a standalone half day course. Most students combine Oxygen Therapy course with the Automatic External Defibrilators course as it is quite common that both skills are ideal for first aiders working in nursing homes, companies with emergency oxygen for first aid purposes or industries where there is a risk of dangerous fume inhalation etc.

Anyone can suffer sudden illness or injury. It does not matter whether the illness or injury is caused in the workplace or at home, it is important to give them immediate attention and call an ambulance in serious cases. First Aid at Work covers the requirements you need to ensure this happens.

Current Legislation

Current Legislation – Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide suitable first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel to enable immediate assistance to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. Regulation 3(2) states that in order to provide first aid to injured or ill employees, ‘..a person shall not be suitable unless he has undergone -

Such training and has such qualifications as the Health and Safety Executive may approve for the time being in respect of that case or class of case, and

Such additional training, if any, as may be appropriate in the circumstances of that case’

Detailed information can be found in First aid at work. The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

If you have identified that first-aiders are needed in your workplace, they must have a valid certificate of competence in FAW or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW). EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. FAW training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses. The findings of the first-aid needs assessment can help you decide whether your first-aiders should be trained in FAW or EFAW. As a guide, the table in First aid at work: your questions answered suggests what first-aid personnel to provide under different circumstances. You can also use the new First aid at work assessment tool which is designed to help employers determine the number and type of first-aid personnel to provide in their workplace.

The Medical Wing Ltd established Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Course covers the effectiveness of using an AED over basic life support in successfully treating a cardiac arrest.

Delegates are trained in the theory of when AED use is needed and why shocks are given. There will be extended practical sessions to familiarise students with AED use and integrating it during Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

This is an extended component that is also included in the FPOS Intermediate courses and can be run as a stand alone half day course. However it is highly recommended that it is taken in conjunction with the Oxygen Therapy course.

In many areas, emergency vehicles are likely to carry Automated External Defibrillation units (AEDs), with some ambulances carrying an AED in addition to manual defibrillators. Police or fire vehicles often carry an AED for first responder use. Some areas have dedicated community first responders, who are volunteers tasked with keeping an AED and taking it to any victims in their area. Automated External Defibrillation units AEDs are also increasingly common on commercial airliners, cruise ships, and other transportation facilities.

Unlike regular defibrillators, an automated external defibrillator requires minimal training to use. It automatically diagnoses the heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. Automatic models will administer the shock without the user’s command. Semi-automatic models will tell the user that a shock is needed, but the user must tell the machine to do so, usually by pressing a button. In most circumstances, the user cannot override a “no shock” advisory by an AED. Some AEDs may be used on children – those under 55 lbs (25 kg) in weight or under age 8. If a particular model of AED is approved for pediatric use, all that is required is the use of more appropriate pads.
